    Events The Monk's Table: Philosophy of Korean Temple Cuisine

    The Korean Cultural Center in Sweden will present three programs on Korean Temple Food in Stockholm in November 2025. The series is designed to introduce the philosophy, culinary traditions, and sustainability principles of Korean temple cuisine to Swedish audiences and industry professionals. This year’s programs will feature Venerable Beop Song and Chef Oh Kyungsoon.
Venerable Beop Song, the abbot of Youngseonsa Temple and former instructor of the Temple Food curriculum at Le Cordon Bleu London, will lead the Baru Gongyang experience on November 25.
Chef Oh Kyungsoon, owner-chef of “Doosugobang” and a leading researcher of traditional Korean plant-based cuisine, will present a live cooking demonstration and tasting on November 26, showcasing dishes adapted to locally available ingredients. A separate professional hands-on seminar exploring the principles and applications of temple cuisine will also be held. Please find the full program details below. Program 1.     The Korean Cultural Center in Sweden is pleased to present the Guest Country Special Exhibition of the 2025 Stockholm Craft Week, “Our Home: Korean Craft Archive 2025.”  As the Guest Country Special Exhibition of Stockholm Craft Week, Sweden’s largest craft festival, this exhibition highlights the wide spectrum of contemporary Korean craft. A total of 21 Korean craft artists active in Korea, Sweden, the Netherlands, and beyond will participate, showcasing works across diverse media including furniture, objects, textiles, metal, and ceramics.     As part of the 2026 spring program theme, “ROOT: Our Foundation”, the Korean Cultural Center in Sweden has organized the lecture to explore the foundational elements of Korean culture through the lens of contemporary popular content.  Using the animation "K-Pop Demon Hunters" as a starting point, this lecture will examine how traditional Korean culture continues to shape contemporary K-content. The session will highlight elements such as shamanic beliefs, Hanbok’s five-color aesthetics, palace symbolism, traditional music, and warding-off-evil motifs, and how these cultural traditions influence the energy, rhythms, and collective sing-along culture of modern K-pop. This lecture offers a unique opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the essence of Korean aesthetics and the cultural spirit behind familiar popular culture. Prof. Dr. Jean Park Research Professor, Center for Korean History, Korea University Prof. Dr. Jean Park is a specialist in Korean history who has long taught international students through Korean history and culture. Her lectures connect Korea’s traditions with contemporary cultural media such as K-dramas, films, cuisine, and everyday cultural symbols.

    The Korean Cultural Center in Sweden is presenting a special lecture on Korean temple cuisine in April 2026 as part of the theme “ROOT: Our Foundation”, highlighting the deep roots of Korean food culture. The lecture, titled “Where Does This Food Come From?”, will introduce the history and philosophy of Korean temple cuisine, its ingredients and cooking methods, and the reasons why it is gaining global attention today. A tasting program will also be offered, allowing participants to experience the delicate and profound flavors of Korean temple food firsthand. The lecture will be led by Venerable Beopsong, head monk of Yeongseonsa Temple in Daejeon. Venerable Beopsong has actively promoted the traditions and spirit of Korean temple cuisine both domestically and internationally, and has also lectured on Korean temple food at Le Cordon Bleu in France and the UK. Through publications such as A Table with Nature, A Table with the Sea, and A Table with Roots, she has consistently introduced the philosophy and seasonality of Korean temple cuisine. We welcome the participation of anyone interested in traditional Korean food culture, well-being, and sustainable eating practices.
